nice to meet you

I'm Jackie Strand

Hi there, my name is Jackie Strand and I’m a psychotherapist in New York City. I work with adolescents and adults dealing with a variety of mental health struggles. I create a collaborative environment for clients to feel safe, and use a psychoanalytical approach to get to the core of the issue. Come say “hi” at my office at Alma in midtown Manhattan!

we're in this together

Therapeutic Approach

Like many in the mental health field, I care a lot about people and chose this path because I wanted to make a difference. Everyone has a story to tell about what has led them to be the dynamic individual they are today. I strive to make every client feel important and heard. I empathize with any difficulties they may be going through, and hope to create a safe and meaningful space for self expression and healing. I think young adolescents and young adulthood is such a pivotal time in one’s life. It’s when you’re becoming who you are, while deciding who you want to become. During these life stages, there are so many exciting changes, and also life altering hardships and disappointments. I work with clients to recognize patterns of behavior, and together we can create more positive changes to help cope with life stressors.

Through my years of experience, I have many therapeutic tools to help assist my clients; but my therapeutic approach is always to meet my client where they are at right now in their life. This space is for YOU. While my job is to provide you with insight and clarity, my utmost goal is to create an environment where we are working together to treat your goals and needs. Our first few sessions are all about creating a comfortable working environment and learning about who you are. I’m interested to learn your background, upbringing, current life events and what brings you to therapy. Many people describe feeling like a weight has been lifted, and feel relieved to have space for them to be seen and heard.

therapy can feel intimidating

It’s a scary thing to come into a session with a complete stranger and express yourself. I want you to know that when you walk in, I will be greeting you with a warm smile. The fact that you have chosen to give therapy a try is so impressive! You are showing up for yourself and are willing to do something new, and that takes courage and openness. Change is scary, but so much greatness lies in discomfort, so don’t be afraid of it. We are in this together!

couples
therapy

Couples therapy is great for all partnerships! It can be a way to reconnect, find better understanding and clarity, and also help recognize healthy and unhealthy patterns of communication in your relationship. As your couples therapist, I’m always on both your sides and am always looking for all the things you already do so well in your relationship! Through this therapeutic journey we will gain more insight and may find some helpful tweaks in order to make sure you and your partner feel heard and understood better!

individual
therapy

Individual therapy can help you learn more life skills, find clarity and insight while also help you to overcome issues big and small. If you feel anxious or depressed, worn down or overwhelmed, therapy can be such a useful and supportive tool to help you live your best life!

family
therapy

Every family is unique! Sometimes family therapy can be helpful to improve communication habits as a whole, or to work through a specific issue that could benefit from some outside guidance.

adolescent
therapy

Being a teenager is both exciting and stressful! … and with social media, peer pressure, academic pressure and family pressure, it can be really helpful to have outside support to help navigate through difficult times. For years I worked solely as an adolescent therapist. I pride myself on being supportive, easy to talk to and non-judgmental!
